Lighting – Balancing Light & Shade
The role of light – both natural and artificial – in creating environment and mood has long been regarded as of critical importance to the quest for style and comfort. The orientation to North of certain rooms within our homes is often a guiding principle in how or when we use them and the abject lack of light during our winter months is a common cause of unhappiness and undesirable mood swings!
Thankfully, the advent of home automation and Smart Home technology has simplified the way that this medium is managed and controlled. At the same time, light has unlocked an extra dimension of space by changing room functions at the touch of a button – no longer is it a simple case of ‘on’ of ‘off’ but rather a blend of intensity, purpose and duration.
Lighting Design
Offering an advanced competency in the planning of lighting, Wills Brothers can help you achieve optimal luminosity internally and externally. By determining your lighting needs based on taste, décor, personal routines, use of space and budget, a comprehensive detailed drawing will be produced along with a proposed specification of products and controls.
Although it may seem obvious, the essential point to note when considering new-build, refurbishment or extension is that lighting should be considered at a very early stage of the overall design – waiting until after the major building works are finished will mean a lot more work later on in the programme and thus a far greater cost.
Other points to note are that natural light should be utilised wherever possible (it is more economical and generally of better ‘quality’ than artificial) and that the proposed major uses of lighting (work areas, features, or ambient) should be studied and documented in detail prior to instructing a commission.
